Melt Temperature Measurement Kit

Available exclusively from Mouldshop, the Melt Temperature Measurement System (MTMS) is a pioneering method of being able to accurately measure material melt temperature whilst removing the chance of human error. The goal of all injection moulders is to minimise process variation and improve quality through continuous process improvement. MTMS is Accurate, Fast and Repeatable meaning that it can become part of your process validation procedure.

Rather than purging onto the bed of the machine and using a basic penetration probe to measure the temperature the patented system is based on two primary principles. The first is to keep the purge molten by using an insulator cup. And the second is to precisely position the thermocouple probe in the effective flow path for shot/purge-to-shot/purge repeatability. With the MTMS Kit, the patented insulator cup maintains the melt temperature in the cup and prevents skinning.  This allows the melt temperature to be measured far more accurately.

• Low cost purge
• Safe : no hands in or near purge
• Measures small shot sizes
• Repeatable from operator to operator, machine to machine
• Accurate within+/-1%
• Eliminates human error
• Fast : under 1 min interruption, as low as 35 seconds
• Heavy duty, long lasting thermocouple probe

Melt temperature is one of the four major variables required to make high quality parts, however many moulders do not realise the barrel temperature is not the melt or process temperature. The melt or process temperature, as recommended by the material supplier, is the purge or output temperature from the injection moulding machine. Five variables affect the melt temperature, they are barrel temperature (controlled by heater bands), screw RPM, backpressure, screw design, and residence time. The barrel heater bands only accounts for 25% to 30% of the heat in the melt.  The majority of the heat come from the screw RPM and backpressure through shear.  The residence time also affects the melt temperature as the faster the cycle the more heat required to keep up with the melt. The interactions between these variables and the ability for a specific resin to respond to shear will affect the melt temperature.
